Organisational and Management Changes at Hirslanden’s Lucerne Hospitals

Dominik Utiger (53) has been employed at Klinik St. Anna since 2001 and was appointed Hospital Manager in 2006. He has also been a member of the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group’s Operations Commitee since July 2015. Over the past 17 years he has made a major contribution towards the evolution of Klinik St. Anna from a hospital that collaborated exclusively with affiliated doctors to a major regional hospital offering modern, interdisciplinary medical care. As such, his decision to leave Klinik St. Anna was a difficult one. After much deliberation, he has chosen to resign as Hospital Manager. “I was offered the opportunity to join one of my colleague’s medical practices and work as a doctor again,” says Dominik Utiger. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. And because Martin Nufer is the best possible successor for the hospital and he’s prepared to take on the role, I believe I made the right decision at the right time.” Utiger says he will continue to feel a close connection with Klinik St. Anna and will honour his ongoing duties on various executive boards.

As of 1 June 2018, the new Hospital Manager at Klinik St. Anna will be Martin Nufer (52). He has worked at the hospital since 2007, originally as an internal medicine specialist and Head of the Emergency Department, then in 2012 he became the Medical Director and Deputy Hospital Manager. Martin Nufer is highly qualified in internal medicine and has a further specialisation in emergency medicine. After his studies in Zurich, he spent three years at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, where he completed a Master of Science in Management at the Sloan School. Martin Nufer is married and lives with his wife and four children in Adligenswil.

Regional medical care networks

The leadership handover at Klinik St. Anna is representative of the impressive continuity at the hospital’s management level. Such stability is of key importance given the current political challenges in the healthcare industry. Developments such as the shift towards outpatient treatment have validated the Hirslanden Group’s decision to create regional networks for medical care. In this regard, the Hirslanden locations in Lucerne have been leading the way for years. The hospital in Meggen, which was acquired in 2014, has been successfully integrated into the Hirslanden Group. A new interdisciplinary outpatient centre is currently being added to the medical facility in Lucerne’s central train station and is due to be completed by autumn. “The expanded centre will enable us to meet the needs of our patients even better than before,” says Martin Nufer. Medical innovation will also be actively promoted at the Lucerne

locations. According to Martin Nufer, “the Central Swiss population deserves the freedom to choose when it comes to first-class medical care.”

In future, the Hirslanden hospitals in Lucerne will continue to become more closely integrated and will be led by a single hospital management team. Andrea Bazzani (37), who has been the Hospital Manager at Hirslanden Klinik Meggen since 2016, will move to the Hirslanden Group’s corporate office in Zurich at the end of April. With great energy and determination she successfully oversaw the integration of Klinik Meggen, which was acquired by the Hirslanden Group in 2014, modernised its organisational structure and continually increased the hospital’s capacity. Daniel Liedtke, Chief Operating Officer of the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group, believes the foundation has been laid for the ongoing development of the Lucerne locations: “We are building on this foundation in order to create an integrated medical care network in Central Switzerland that will excellently accommodate changing patient requirements.”
