Organisational changes in the executive committee of the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group

The Hirslanden Private Hospital Group restructured its regional organisation in October last year. To ensure a better support organisation, the hospitals were split into two regions, "West" and "East". The two Regional Operating Officers Stéphan Studer and Dr. Stephan Pahls have since been in charge of operational management of the regions.

From 1 May 2019, the two Regional Operating Officers will join the Executive Committee of the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group and will be responsible for the former remit of the Chief Operating Officer (COO). As they will sit on the Executive Committee, their titles will change to Chief Operating Officer West and East.

Stéphan Studer (43) has been working for the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group since 2015, first as Hospital Manager of Clinique La Colline and from October 2018 as Regional Operating Officer West. Previously, he worked at the University Hospital Lausanne (CHUV), and since 2012 as the Administrative Director of the Department of Musculoskeletal Medicine and the Department of Clinical Neuroscience. Until 2015, he was also employed as an international football referee by FIFA, the world football association. Stéphan Studer is a qualified physiotherapist. He has a Masters in Social Sciences from the University of Lausanne as well as an Executive MBA, with specialisation in healthcare, from the University of Geneva. Stéphan Studer is married with two children.

Stephan Pahls (53) holds a doctorate in Medicine and is very familiar with the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group. From 2008 to 2013, he was Head of Business Development at Klinik Hirslanden in Zurich. After working for a time as an independent business consultant, he returned to Hirslanden in 2015 as Head of Group Business Development. From September 2017 he was also responsible for the management of Hirslanden Klinik Linde. He has been Regional Operating Officer for the East region since October 2018. Before joining Hirslanden, Stephan Pahls worked with a number of international development cooperation organisations in the Middle East. After finishing his studies at the University of Zurich he practised as a doctor, including at the Zurich University Hospital. He has a Masters in Health Policy, Planning and Financing as well as an Executive MBA. Stephan Pahls is married with four children.

The reorganisation of the Executive Committee has obvious advantages: The two Chief Operating Officers will focus on developments in their respective regions and engage in a regular exchange with the Hospital Managers. In this way they can provide support for the regions and hospitals and directly represent their interests on the Executive Committee.

Hirslanden Private Hospital Group

The Hirslanden Private Hospital Group consists of 18 hospitals in 11 cantons, many of which have an outpatient surgery centre and emergency department. The Group also operates 4 outpatient clinics, 17 radiology institutes and 5 radiotherapy institutes. As of 31 March 2018, the group had around 1,680 affiliated doctors and 9,635 employees, of whom 461 were permanently employed doctors. Hirslanden is the leading private hospital group and the largest medical network in Switzerland. In the 2017/18 financial year, the group generated turnover of 1,735 million Swiss francs. Between 01.01.2018 and 31.03.2018 the group treated more than 102,903 patients, amounting to a total of 473,343 inpatient days. In insurance terms, the patient mix consists of 47.9% basic, 29.7% semi-private, and 22.4% private insured patients.
