Accident and sports surgery is a specialist surgical discipline that is devoted to the treatment of the locomotor apparatus. The accident surgeon, also known as a traumatologist, diagnoses and treats acute injuries of all degrees of severity after road, occupational, and sports accidents that affect the bony skeleton, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons.
However, due to the similarities between the treatment methods used, accident surgeons also treat, for instance, bone fractures caused by cancer or osteoporosis, or perform cartilage grafts and joint replacement operations for osteoarthritis.
More complex injuries, i.e. when other organs are involved, are treated by an interdisciplinary team. Depending on the injury, the accident surgeon will call upon other organ specialists such as hand, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, neurosurgeons, spinal surgeons, heart, thoracic and vascular surgeons, oromaxillofacial surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons and urologists.
