Please check in advance whether you require a visa for Switzerland. You will find information on visa requirements in the website of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
If you need a visa, Hirslanden International will issue a Medical Visa Invitation after your treatment has been scheduled and payment has been received in full. The invitation confirms that you are planning to have medical treatment at one of our hospitals and includes the designated time period. You can use this document to apply for a visa from your embassy. Please note that visa processing can take several weeks.
If you are travelling back to your country of residence shortly after your stay in one of our hospitals, the question may arise about your fitness to travel. We recommend that you consult your attending doctor before treatment about certification for flight or return travel. It is helpful to ask your airline or travel operator about their fit-to-fly requirements in order to obtain the according documentation or forms in advance. Please note that we only offer Fit-to-Fly „F2F“ certification for patients who have been treated by one of our resident physicians.
If you are planning to fly, you should aim to be in Switzerland by the time you reach the 36th week of pregnancy. For health reasons, some airlines do not allow pregnant women to fly after this time.
Are you planning to give birth in Switzerland? More information is available here.
If you are visiting Switzerland for a holiday or other reasons, some hospitals offer dialysis facilities for visitors.
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic a number of special conditions are in force for entry into Switzerland. You will find the latest information on the website of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health.

Medical treatment varies from patient to patient. The same applies to the administrative processing of patient files – you will receive individualised assistance in accordance with your personal situation.
Nevertheless, to give you an idea of the most important stages of your treatment, we have put together a summary of information that applies to most patients.
Outpatient procedures take place in a day clinic. You can leave the clinic on the same day.
Inpatient stays refer to all treatments that require at least one overnight stay in hospital, or instances where the patient is transferred to a hospital after an outpatient procedure (e.g. after emergency surgery). If you choose to have treatment at one of our hospitals, we will organise all aspects of your stay for you.
Outpatient care
If you have international health insurance and are interested in an outpatient consultation with one of our doctors, simply contact Hirslanden International. We will record your personal details including your insurance policy and medical needs. Please send us any relevant medical reports and documentation you may have.
As soon as we have received your information, we will contact your preferred doctor to request a medical opinion. This will include the details of any necessary treatment.
If your preferred doctor is able to perform the treatment, we will gladly arrange an appointment for you. Should your desired doctor not be able to perform the treatment, we will – if possible – recommend another doctor from one of our hospitals.
Please discuss the invoicing and payment directly with your attending doctor. After the treatment is completed you can submit the invoice to your insurance company.
Inpatient care
If you are a patient with international health insurance and require inpatient care please contact Hirslanden International directly. We will gladly record your personal and medical details and kindly ask that you provide your insurance policy and any relevant medical reports and documentation.
We will ask your preferred doctor to provide a medical opinion regarding your case. This will include details of any necessary inpatient treatment (including surgery), as well as the doctor’s fee.
If your preferred doctor is able to perform the treatment, we will prepare a comprehensive quote for you. It will also include any additional services, you wish to take advantage of during your stay. Should your desired doctor not be able to perform the treatment, we will – if possible – suggest another specialist from one of our hospitals.
After you have accepted our quote, we will get in contact with you to arrange a date for the inpatient procedure.
In the meantime, we will send your health insurance provider a request regarding the coverage of costs for your treatment. We will inform you whether your insurer accepts, partially accepts or rejects the request. If it is accepted, you can be admitted to the hospital on the arranged date. If your insurer only partially accepts or rejects the request, you will be required to pay a deposit in the amount of the uncovered costs, before the inpatient procedure can take place. There are three ways to make the payment:

After your payment has been received you will be admitted to the hospital on the scheduled date.
After the procedure, we will issue a detailed invoice, including additional services you received. If you insurer is covering all the costs, we will directly send it the final invoice directly to them. If your insurer is only partially paying the costs, we will send the invoice to your personal address. In such cases we will deduct the deposit you have already paid from the total amount, which means you may need to make an additional payment, or you may receive a partial reimbursement. Afterwards you can submit the final invoice to your insurance company for a refund.
Outpatient care
Self-paying patients can also contact Hirslanden International regarding outpatient treatment. We require your personal details and information about your medical needs, as well as any available and relevant medical reports and documentation.
As soon as we have received the above-mentioned information, we will ask your preferred doctor to provide a medical opinion including details regarding possible treatment and their fees.
If your preferred doctor is available to perform the treatment, we will contact you and your doctor to organise an appointment for the examination/treatment. We will send you a personalised quote based on the details provided by the doctor. Should your preferred doctor not be able to perfomr the treatment, we will – if possible – recommend another doctor from one of our hospitals.
To ensure everything runs smoothly, we kindly ask you to pay the costs detailed in the quote prior to the outpatient procedure/examination. There are three ways to make a payment:

As soon as we have received your payment, the treatment can go ahead as planned.
Afterwards we will send you a detailed final invoice regarding your treatment. If the final amount differs from your initial deposit, you will either receive a reimbursement or you may need to make an additional payment.
Inpatient care
If you require inpatient treatment and plan to cover the costs yourself, Hirslanden International will be happy to assist. Please send us your personal details, information about your medical needs, as well as any relevant medical reports and documentation.
After the above-mentioned information has been received, we will ask your preferred doctor to provide a medical opinion including details regarding possible treatment and their fees. If the specialist is available to perform the procedure, we will send you a personalised quote. It will also include any additional services, you wish to take advantage of during your stay. Otherwise we will – if possible – recommend another doctor from one of our hospitals.
If you approve the quote, we will gladly organise an appointment for your treatment. You are kindly asked to balance the amount for the services listed in our quote before your inpatient stay. There are three ways to make the payment:

As soon as we have received your payment, the inpatient procedure can go ahead as planned.
After your stay at the hospital you will receive a detailed final invoice regarding your treatment. It will include all the services you received during your stay. If the final amount payable differs from your initial deposit, you will either receive a reimbursement or you may need to make an additional payment.
On request we will gladly organise your medical transport to and from the hospital – by road, rail or air. Please note that we require separate confirmation from your international health insurance company that they will cover any transport costs incurred. If your insurer does not cover transport costs, you will need to settle the costs yourself. In such cases patients are required to pay a deposit prior to travelling.
