Skull base surgery involves the detection and treatment of diseases (tumours or other disorders of the skull base area) or injuries to the skull base due to accidents. The skull base comprises the lower part of the skull, including the transitions to the cervical spine, the nasopharyngeal space and the facial skull.
Here, there are also openings to the extended spinal cord, the cranial nerves and the cerebral blood vessels. This is why surgery on the spinal base is considered particularly demanding. In addition, the skull base is adjacent to other important anatomical areas such as the oral and maxillofacial area, the eyes and the ear, nose and throat area. This requires close collaboration with specialists in these fields.
