Geriatrics is a specialised field of medicine that deals with the physical, mental, functional and social aspects of medical care for elderly patients (both healthy and ill). This includes preventing, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic diseases and also transferring patients to specialised institutions. It also involves engaging external professionals (home helps and carers) to provide outpatient care.
Specialists provide elderly patients with end-of-life support and counselling on psychosocial and palliative issues. Geriatricians work closely with general practitioners and/or attending specialists. The main aim of all treatments is to maintain or increase the functional capabilities of elderly patients, improve their quality of life and preserve their independence.
