Pre-hospital emergency medicine involves providing medical care to people in acute, often life-threatening situations - even before they reach a hospital. Emergency physicians with a certificate of competence from the Swiss Society for Emergency and Rescue Medicine (SGNOR) are specially trained to act quickly and purposefully in out-of-hospital emergencies.

They often work in the rescue service, in air rescue or at major incidents with many injured people and take over medical management directly on site. Their aim is to stabilise the patient's condition and ensure the best possible preparation for subsequent treatment in hospital.

This specialisation requires extensive clinical experience, in-depth knowledge of emergency medicine and regular further training. SGNOR-accredited emergency physicians are proficient in advanced resuscitation, pain therapy, airway management and the management of severe trauma. They are important links between the rescue service, hospital and other emergency services - and make a decisive contribution to saving lives and preventing permanent damage.
