The Certificate of Proficiency in Radiation Protection in Cardiology or in Paediatric Cardiology can be acquired by specialists with an FMH qualification in cardiology or paediatric cardiology. This Certificate of Proficiency entitles the holder to perform diagnostic or therapeutic X-ray examinations in the low, medium and high dose range on the heart or blood vessels. These include cardiac catheter examinations with fluoroscopic imaging, the radiographic visualisation of arteries and veins and the implantation of cardiac pacemakers. These examinations are used in particular to detect and treat diseases of the coronary vessels or the heart.
Advanced training in radiation protection ensures that holders of this Certificate of Proficiency are aware of possible risks associated with X-ray examinations. They are familiar with the regulatory requirements in the Federal Radiation Protection Ordinance and ensure that these requirements are met. In all X-ray examinations, it is important to protect patients from harmful X-rays and to comply with the statutory limits for radiation exposure. The Certificate of Proficiency in Radiation Protection in Cardiology is a necessary prerequisite for this.
