Gastroenterology is the field that specialises in the digestive organs, from the oesophagus to the rectum. It also deals with diseases of the pancreas, liver and gallbladder.
Gastroenterologists with this certification are permitted as non-radiologists to carry out fluoroscopy-assisted endoscopic examinations of the digestive tract. Fluoroscopic assistance means that X-rays are taken during the examination. Such examinations include gastroscopies and colonoscopies (for example, to remove foreign bodies), insertions of feeding and relief tubes and drainage of cysts or abscesses.
