Gynaecological ultrasound is used to study pelvic structures such as the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and bladder.

It is an examination of choice in the evaluation of gynecological problems such as :

  • Pelvic pain
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Endometriosis research
  • Presence of uterine fibroids
  • Evaluation of ovarian cysts/tumors
  • Search for uterine malformations

The examination is preferably performed vaginally and lasts only a few minutes. For patients whose vaginal examination is not an option, the examination can be performed abdominally. In this case, the bladder must be full to ensure the best image quality.

Sometimes, to better assess the appearance of the uterine cavity or the patency of the fallopian tubes, conventional ultrasound must be supplemented by hysterosonography.

During this examination, sterile water or contrast medium is injected through a thin catheter to slightly distend the uterine cavity and observe the passage through the fallopian tubes.
