Expertise

The treatment of conditions and injuries affecting the hip joint is one of the specialties of the Bern Orthopaedics Centre at Salem-Spital. Thanks to the cooperation of the different hip specialists, the entire spectrum of hip surgery is covered.

The team at BOC treats bone fractures of the pelvis, thigh and, in particular, bone fractures in the elderly. It also offers complete sports traumatology for the hip. A major focus lies on joint-preserving therapies. The centre has a high degree of expertise in the treatment of hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement), a common clinical picture. Both arthroscopy of the hip and open interventions (surgical hip dislocation) are performed.

The group also specialises in treating advanced wear and tear. The treatment of hip osteoarthritis and the placement of hip prostheses are among the most common procedures. Bern Orthopaedics Centre is one of the largest prosthetics centres in the canton of Bern, with corresponding experience and optimised treatment regimens. Due to the high level of expertise, treatment can be adapted very individually to each patient. All available modern technologies, including computer-aided three-dimensional planning tools and navigation systems, are available. The operation can now also be performed with the robotic arm-assisted surgical technique Mako.

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are standard procedure for minimal tissue damage. The medical specialists also have extensive experience in major revision operations on artificial joints and reconstructive surgery in the pelvic area during complex hip replacement operations. Close cooperation with other specialist disciplines is one of the strengths of Bern Orthopaedics Centre and enables the best possible treatment.
