Internal Medicine is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of complex diseases in adults. The Internal Medicine Physician leads and coordinates a multidisciplinary consultation with other specialists. He or she can have a specialisation in disciplines derived from Internal Medicine, such as cardiology, pulmonology, rheumatology, nephrology, diabetology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nutrition, allergy, immunology, oncology, geriatrics, infectious diseases or haematology.
Internal Medicine Physicians manage patients at the emergency centre as a first resort. When a hospitalisation is necessary, Internal Medicine Physicians follow and supervise patients throughout their stay. They work closely together with attending physicians who address them their patients for additional investigations or treatments that cannot be completed in an outpatient setting. They are also partners of the clinic’s medical specialists who request they work with them as consultants for their patients. Internal Medicine Physicians are also family doctors based in a medical centre.
