Operative therapy for prostate carcinoma requires extensive experience in order to maintain long-term bodily functions such urinary continence and potency and to obtain the goal of a cure. Dr. Jean-Luc Fehr has accomplished pioneering work in this field in recent years:
Dr. J.-L. Fehr head of the Urology Department at the Canton Hospital in Schaffhausen since 1999, one of the first centres in Europe, has established the laparoscopic prostatectomy (removal of the prostate by means of abdominal laparoscopy) with more than 350 operations.
Thus a proven and universally recognised team is available to the Urology Department. The minimal loss of blood, the limited pain and the quick rehabilitation have been groundbreaking for the success of these new techniques. Our findings are gathered and assessed on an ongoing basis in order to do justice to the quality requirements. Besides the paramount goal of freedom from tumour, our efforts are directed towards continence and potency. The conservative, blood saving technology with a 10-fold optical magnification permits an outstanding view of the crucial vessels and nerves.
Extensive experience with laparoscopic and robotic-assisted technology has also led to our being able to use the advantages of keyhole surgery now for many operations on the kidneys and adrenal glands as well. One does not always have to operate on prostate cancer. Radiation treatments can also be a therapy option. Depending on the stage of the disease and the age, an attitude of watchful waiting or hormone blockade are also options.
This matter is clarified individually with the patient. Regular, active participation in international conferences allows us to give competent advice to our patients.
