The Division of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology of the Institute of General Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases engages in a broad range of patient care, research, and educational activities.
Patient care and consultation is provided for hospitalized and ambulatory adult patients with every variety of infectious disease.
Among special services offered by the Division are the following:
- Diagnosis and treatment of prosthetic joint infections as well as infections of other implanted prosthetic materials
- Management of postoperative patients with infectious complications
- Lyme disease and other zoonotic infections
- Treatment of patients with chronic viral infections such as HIV, viral hepatitis
- Fungal infections
- Nosocomial infection control and management, including hospital epidemiology
The services that the Division of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology provides are comprehensive. In some circumstances, these services are chiefly consultative and collaborative, working hand-in-hand with referring physicians. In other circumstances, care is longitudinal and the Division serves as the principal caregiver for patients that are hospitalized for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. In nearly all instances, care is multidisciplinary, involving other physicians and medical professionals.
