We understand that you might be feeling anxious in view of the recent developments. We would like to clarify some of the key issues which are particularly relevant for you as a patient at the Bern Biel Breast Centre.
Am I in a group of people who are particularly at risk (subsequently referred to as a “vulnerable group”)?
- I have had breast cancer. However, I am feeling healthy now and my aftercare has recently been progressing normally.
You are not in a vulnerable group.
Women do not contract infectious diseases more frequently after breast cancer. You are now just as healthy as anyone else and should be feeling that way. - I have had chemotherapy in the past.
You are not in a vulnerable group.
Your immune system was only compromised for a short period by the chemotherapy. You can generally assume that once your white blood cells (leukocytes) have recovered, your immune defences will be functioning normally. - I am taking antihormone medication, or have taken it in the past (such as tamoxifen, anastrozole e.g. Arimidex®, letrozole e.g. Femara®, exemestane e.g. Aromasin®).
You are not in a vulnerable group.
Women are not at any additional risk whatsoever during or after antihormone therapy. - I have completed my course of chemotherapy and am receiving intravenous antibody treatment (e.g. Herceptin® or Perjeta®).
You are not in a vulnerable group, provided that your blood count has recovered from the chemotherapy.
- You are in a vulnerable group if...
a) …you are currently receiving chemotherapy.
b) …you are taking CDK4/6 inhibitors (palbociclib = Ibrance®, ribociclib = Kisqali®, abemaciclib).
c) …you have diseases at an advanced stage requiring long-term treatment (e.g. everolimus, alpelisib, cortisone preparations)
If you are a patient in a vulnerable group, please discuss how to proceed during your oncological consultation.
